Aegina – An Island for Any Season

The island of Aegina is the perfect holiday destination and there is no reason to restrict your choice of dates to the high season in summer. Naturally, summer is a wonderful time to come and enjoy lazy days on the beach, enjoying the crystal clear waters or just relaxing on the sand with a good book; however Aegina has much more to offer and spring and autumn have attractions all of their own.

Aegina in Springtime

For many visitors one of the main reasons for choosing Aegina as a holiday destination is the number and quality of the historic sites and ruins found here.  The history of the island is fascinating, dating back to the Bronze Age. If you are interested in exploring the different sites, then spring is an ideal time to visit. The sun in summer can make walking strenuous; in spring the temperatures are pleasantly warm and more comfortable for rambling.  Walking around the island in spring you will also have the pleasure of being surrounded by beautiful flowers and being able to wander beneath blossom-decked trees. The singing of the birds and the cooling breeze combine to ensure that your journey is as pleasant as your destination. Take your time and explore, stop and have a picnic; Aegina in spring should be savoured and enjoyed. The island offers beautiful scenery, from mountains to woodland, beaches to wetlands; traditional villages with welcoming tavernas tempt the walker onwards.  You can experience many different aspects of Greece in one beautiful island. If you are intending to do a lot of walking while on holiday in Aegina it is worth taking some basic safety precautions; although temperatures are lower in spring than in summer you should still carry bottles of water to ward off dehydration. Carry a simple first aid kit with plasters and antiseptic wipes in case of bumps and grazes. Take a mobile phone with your hotel’s phone number saved in the memory and have your own name and your hotel’s name and address on you. Make sure you arrange travel insurance before you leave home; cover and prices vary widely so it is worthwhile taking the time to compare different providers to make sure you have the best cover and deal for you.  It’s very unlikely you will need any of these precautions but knowing that they are there gives you the freedom to enjoy your rambling with an easy mind.

Aegina in Autumn

The weather in Aegina in the autumn is still warm and sunny and the beaches and walks can still be enjoyed. Another reason to visit Aegina in autumn is the annual pistachio festival, the Fistiki Fest, which takes place in the second half of September. The pistachios of Aegina have a reputation of being the best in the world and Aegina is very proud of its pistachio tradition. In 1996 the name ‘pistachio of Aegina’ was registered by the European Union as a Protected Designation of Origin. Every year Aegina holds a festival to celebrate the pistachio harvest. The festival combines art, dance, music and theatre with many opportunities to taste the pistachio and watch cooking demonstrations. Dramatic displays illustrate some of Aegina’s history and workshops encourage visitors to take part in creative and artistic activities. As well as the pistachio industry the festival showcases some of the other traditions of Aegina, such as sponge fishing and dry-stone walling and some of Aegina’s historic buildings and monuments can be explored on guided tours. There is a special children’s area where younger festival goers can learn, create and have fun, and a funfair. The whole festival lasts over four days and culminates in a harbour-front parade with a ceremonial burning of a dragon, to symbolise the ridding of the island of evil and to ensure a good pistachio harvest in the next year. There is then a goodbye party with live music carrying on into the night. The atmosphere during the festival is warm and friendly with music and laughter continually in the air; locals and visitors mingle and everyone enjoys the celebration.

Whatever season you choose to come and enjoy Aegina you will probably decide you have picked the best time of year; that is because there is no wrong time to visit. Aegina is a place which truly has so much to offer throughout the year.
